Course Rationale: (700 – 1000 words)
Why you have chosen this syllabus type
I chose a multi-syllabus for this course. A multi-syllabus means we don’t focus on only one thing. We combine
different things like speaking, listening, reading, and vocabulary in the course. I chose this because Alberto needs
help in many areas, not only one. From his questionnaire and interview, he wants to improve speaking, listening,
and vocabulary. He also wants to understand movies and real English. Because of this, one syllabus type is not
enough. A multi-syllabus helps the teacher to teach different skills together. It also makes the lessons more
interesting and useful for real life. This is why this syllabus is the best choice for Alberto.
Why you have chosen the topic(s) covered
I chose topics like current affairs (public transport), science and technology (electric vehicles), travel (visiting
England), movies (modern family TV show), and environment (save the planet). I chose these topics because they
match Alberto’s interests. In his questionnaire, he said he likes travel, movies, environment, and technology.
When a student is interested in a topic, it is easier for him to learn and stay focused. These topics are also useful
for real life. For example, current affairs help him understand news, travel helps him when he goes to other
countries, and environment is a global topic. Movies help him understand natural English. All these topics help
Alberto learn English in a meaningful and interesting way.
Why you have chosen this target language/skill
I focused on listening, reading, speaking, and vocabulary in this course. I chose listening because Alberto said he
has problems understanding spoken English. He wants to understand movies and conversations better. That is
why I included two listening lessons. I chose speaking because he lacks confidence and wants to speak more
fluently. That is why I also included two speaking lessons. I chose reading to help him understand written texts
better and improve his vocabulary. Reading also helps him see how English is used correctly. Vocabulary is not
taught in one lesson only. It is taught in every lesson. This helps Alberto learn new words in context and use
them in speaking and writing. All these skills are important for his improvement.
