Assignment 1 2026
Unique number:
Due Date: 17 April 2026
SECTION A: REFLECTION: POETRY (2 DIFFERENT ANSWERS PROVIDED)
Poem: The Single Voice
Paragraph 1
The poem selected is The Single Voice by M. Chapman from The New Century of South
African Poetry. The poem was chosen because it reflects ideas about identity, unity, and
individuality, which are relevant in the South African context. The first reaction to the poem
was that it presents a strong contrast between the individual and the collective. The lines
that describe one voice compared to many voices created a sense of difference between
personal experience and shared experience. This was interesting but also slightly confusing
at first because the meaning of the voices was not immediately clear. The poem seemed to
suggest that some people speak for themselves, while others represent a larger group,
which required careful reading to understand fully.
