Lesson 1: The Number System (Rational Numbers)
This unit establishes the foundational rules for working
with positive and negative values, fractions, and decimals.
I. CLASSIFICATION OF NUMBERS
To understand rational numbers, they are organized into a
hierarchy from most specific to most general:
• Natural Numbers: Counting numbers starting
from 1.
e.g. (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,....)
• Whole Numbers: Natural numbers plus zero.
e.g. (0,1,2,3,4,5,6,....)
• Integers: Whole numbers and their negative
opposites.
e.g. (...3,2,1,0, -1, -2, -3...)
• Rational Numbers: Any number that can be
expressed as a ffraction. This includes:
- All Integers (e.g., 5 = 5/1)
- Terminating Decimals (e.g., 0.75 = 3/4)
- Repeating decimals (e.g., 0.66666 = 2/3)
