Running head: ANA SCOPE AND STANDARDS OF PRACTICE 1
ANA Scope and Standards of Practice
Part A
Describe four proven strategies used to answer NCLEX style questions.
The strategies for answering NCLEX style questions include finding one’s own pace
during the examination, do not be a perfectionist, the most complete solution is the likeliest
answer, and use Maslow’s hierarchy of needs (Brant, 2010). Finding a good pace in which to
comfortably read, understand and process the question helps in giving the right answer.
Perfectionism also wastes time, which is critical in the NCLEX test. Finally, the most
comprehensive solution is the best choice in answer selection. However, the solution is always in
the answer choices. Application of these basic methods ensures one can comfortably pass the
examination.
Discuss how the ANA Standards of Practice are tested using the NCLEX style of questions.
The ANA Standards of Practice include the following: assessment, diagnosis, outcomes
identification, planning, implementation and evaluation (American Nurses Association, 2010).
The NCLEX questions test the ANA standards of practice through hypothetical scenarios that
gauge the persons skills in the list of standards above.
Discuss how patient care needs can be prioritized using Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs.
Maslow’s hierarchy of needs includes physiological, safety, social, esteem and self-
actualization (Groff & Terhaar, 2010). Patient care is always relative nurses’ performance: when
a nurse is satisfied at work and enjoys their job, they are likely to prioritize patient care needs. In
direct comparison to the hierarchy, physiological needs include good schedules, adequate breaks,
and over-flow expectations. Secondly, in safety needs is the technology and nurse to

physician/patient relations (Groff & Terhaar, 2010). Need for belonging includes teamwork and
collaboration while esteem involves empowerment, promotion and decision-making capability.
Identify how patient safety is often tested with NCLEX style of questions.
Patient safety questions are usually in the safety and care environment section. They
include questions on the safety of patients from new infections, safety in administration of
medication, precautions for isolation of infectious patients as well as safety for underage clients.
Identify NCLEX style of questions, which are testing therapeutic communication skills.
Therapeutic communication questions are under the psychosocial integrity section. They
include questions dealing with patient-nurse interaction, communication skills, therapeutic and
non-theraputic techniques. The responses are in the form of statements or comments.
Discuss how to eliminate options, which indicate the use of poor therapeutic
communication.
Non-therapeutic communication includes techniques such as giving mixed non-verbal
messages, value judgments, false reassurances, focusing on oneself, changing the subject and
giving advice among many others (Vera, 2014). Any options that exhibit these negative
characteristics display ineffective communication and must be eliminated.
Discuss how to identify options, which indicate appropriate therapeutic communication.
Appropriate therapeutic communication includes active listening, encouraging
comparisons, encouraging a realistic approach, empathy, reflect, restate, promoting goal setting
and stating observations. In identifying these options, the responses must have the following
traits: they should focus on the patient’s feelings, show acceptance of the client, must be honest
and concise, must involve active listening, and must have a relation to the client’s verbal or non-
