Non-verbal communication: Appearance
Conversation should move at a comfortable pace and appropriate speed based on the
information. Speak slowly and enunciate clearly. Avoid awkward pauses and rapid shifts
in topic. Think before you speak and develop an awareness of your speech rhythm.
Tone of voice can dramatically alter the meaning and perception of a message. Is your
tone conveying enthusiasm, anger, concern, or indifference? Is this your intention? Avoid
sending unintended messages with your tone of voice.
Personal appearance is a powerful means of nonverbal communication. First impressions
are based primarily on appearance. Nurses also use a client's appearance as a general
impression of health.
Remember that patients closely observe nurses. A nurse who frowns during a procedure
may be interpreted as unconfident. A nurse who looks disgusted when changing a
dressing may be interpreted as disapproving. Our facial expressions are hard to control,
but we must try to avoid showing shock, disgust, dismay, or other distressing reactions in
the presence of a client.
