SEMESTER 1 2026
, Introduction
This glossary looks closely at five important words used in the philosophy of education:
Liberation, Social Justice, Transformation, Equality, and Oppression. These words are
not just abstract ideas; they shape how we think about teaching, learning, and what
schools should do. I will mainly use the HED4804 study units to explain where these
words come from, how their meanings have changed over time, and why people
sometimes disagree about what they really mean. What makes this discussion
important is that I connect each term to education in South Africa today. Our country is
still dealing with the painful legacy of colonialism and apartheid. These histories have
left deep marks on our schools, our curriculum, and the way learners and teachers see
themselves. As for understanding these five key terms, we can better understand the
challenges we face every day in the classroom.
After studying all five terms, one big lesson stands out: none of these words has a
single, fixed meaning. They are alive and changing. They also depend on each other.
For example, you cannot talk about Liberation without understanding Oppression. You
cannot practice Equality without working toward Social Justice. And real Transformation
in education needs all of them together.
For educators who want to build a more fair and democratic society, these terms are not
just nice ideas to talk about. They ask us to think deeply about our own teaching, to
question what we take for granted, and to keep reflecting on whether our actions really
help to free learners from unfair systems. This glossary is a small step in that direction.
