ASSIGNMENT 1 2026

SEMESTER 1 2026
, To what extent is sustainable development a coherent, actionable concept?
Discuss the controversies and complexities around the conceptualisation of
sustainable development.
1. Introduction
Sustainable development became widely known after the Brundtland Commission
report in 1987. It was defined as development that meets the needs of the present
without harming the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Although this
idea is used all over the world, it is still debated and not clearly agreed upon. Rather
than being a simple guide for policy, sustainable development is shaped by struggles
over meaning, power, resources, and values. Debates show that the concept is unclear
and interpreted in different ways. It is also influenced by inequalities between the Global
North and South, often shaped by market-driven or neoliberal ideas, and sometimes
ignores local cultures and knowledge. In addition, measuring sustainable development
is difficult, and its goal of fairness between generations is challenged by the realities of
global capitalism.
