investigating a specific issue or problem in order to generate new knowledge, confirm
existing knowledge, or solve an identified problem. In simpler terms, research is not just
“looking for information,” but rather a carefully planned inquiry that involves collecting,
analysing and interpreting data in a logical way to arrive at valid conclusions. It is guided by
clear objectives and follows a scientific method to ensure that the findings are credible,
reliable and can be justified with evidence.
According to the Module Guide, research is a disciplined inquiry that involves “systematic
investigation aimed at discovering, interpreting or revising facts” (Module Guide, Unit 1, p.7).
This means research must go beyond opinion and be grounded in evidence and logical
reasoning. Therefore, research is essentially a tool for understanding the world in a
structured, objective and evidence-based manner.
