Assignment 2 Semester 1 2026
Due Date: 2026
SECTION A
1. Based on DVA3706 discussion class one, what are the do’s and don’ts in this
module? (6)
Do’s
The first thing students must do in this module is read the study guide, tutorial letters, and
announcements carefully so that they understand the themes, assessment rules, and
expectations of the module. The second important thing is to engage critically with the
module concepts, especially rural development ideas, and support answers with evidence
from the prescribed learning units and other approved academic sources. The third thing
students must do is reference correctly and write in their own words, because academic
work in this module must show understanding, originality, and proper acknowledgement of
sources.

Don’ts
Students must not copy and paste information from sources without proper
referencing, because that amounts to plagiarism. They must also not submit work
that is unrelated to module concepts or unsupported by rural development literature,
since this weakens the academic quality of the answer. A further important point is
that students must not depend on Artificial Intelligence tools to generate
assignments, because this may produce inaccurate, generic, and academically
dishonest work that does not reflect the student’s own understanding.
2. Summary of Fairhead, Leach and Scoones article (10)
Fairhead, Leach and Scoones examine how environmental language is increasingly
being used to justify the taking over of land and natural resources, a process they
call green grabbing. They argue that this does not happen only for farming or
mining, but also in the name of conservation, biodiversity protection, carbon projects,
ecotourism, and biofuel development. Their main concern is that activities presented
as environmentally responsible can still remove land rights, access, and control from
local people, especially poorer communities. The article shows that nature is being
turned into an economic asset that can be bought, sold, managed, and enclosed
