, Introduction and Goals
Identify the three main functions of the digestive system: ingestion,
digestion, elimination.
Recognize key digestive structures—mouth, esophagus, stomach,
intestines, and accessory organs.
Understand mechanical vs chemical digestion—how food is physically
and chemically broken down.
Learn the journey and timeline from food intake to waste elimination.
Three Primary Functions
Digestion
This is the process of breaking down food into smaller molecules. It happens
both:
Mechanically (chewing in the mouth, churning in the stomach)
Chemically (enzymes and acids breaking food into nutrients)
Mechanical vs Chemical Digestion
Mechanical digestion:
Chewing (mouth)
Churning (stomach)
Segmentation and peristalsis (small intestine)
Chemical digestion:
→
Salivary amylase: starch sugar (mouth)
→
Pepsin: protein peptides (stomach)
→
Lipase & bile: fats fatty acids + glycerol (small intestine)
Enzymes from the pancreas target carbs, proteins, fats.
