Case Study Assignment: differential diagnoses and diagnostic
testing
The patient presents with slurred speech and significantly elevated blood
pressure, which necessitates a thorough evaluation to identify the underlying
cause. Key physical exams include a neurological assessment, blood pressure
monitoring, and a fundoscopic exam, while essential diagnostic tests involve CT and
MRI scans of the brain, along with blood tests. These results will help differentiate
between conditions such as stroke, transient ischemic attack, hypertensive
encephalopathy, brain tumor, or seizure. Timely and accurate diagnosis is crucial
for effective management and improving patient outcomes.
Chief Complaint
The patient's chief complaint is slurred speech, which is a concerning
symptom given the elevated blood pressure reading of 210/100 mmHg. Slurred
speech, or dysarthria, can indicate a range of neurological conditions, and the
significantly high blood pressure further raises the suspicion of an acute vascular
event. The combination of these symptoms requires a thorough evaluation to
determine the underlying cause and appropriate management.
