Week 3 Discuss
A description of a positive professional experience when I felt motivated to
perform at my best,
My motivation increases when I am convinced that whatever I do is helpful to others and
contributes significantly to career growth. Michael Maccoby, (2010). Supports the opinion
that, “the most motivating responsibilities are those that stretch and develop skills” (Maccoby,
M. 2010 The 4 Rs of motivation). In 2018, I was offered a position to work as a third shift
supervisor in a leading security services provider with over 200,000 remarkable employees. As
a lover and advocate for security, I accepted this offer.
Although this position offered prolific medical, dental, and vision coverage, life insurance
programs, employee tuition assistance programs, company discounts, perks, and flexible
schedules, my strongest motivation to continue working for this company was the personal
encouragement and coaching I received from my Front line leader (Manager) who
assured/guaranteed me of her availability to work with me and provide the necessary support to
a desired senior leadership position at the company. Because of my interest for the position and
passion to grow, I never called in sick nor did I use my vacation time unreasonably. This was
however a sharp contrast to a previous position held in a medical device company three years
ago.
A description of a challenging professional experience when I didn’t feel very
motivated to perform.
Maintaining a good relationship with one’s boss is one of the most important push factors
for productivity and inclusiveness (Michael Maccoby, 2010). While working as an arterial
perfusionist at a medical device company, I never had a smile on my face when I drove to work
every morning. In addition to imposing compulsory overtimes due to increasing customer
demands for our products, a variety of issues made me lost the
zeal to work for this company. The company had very good policies relating to human
resource management, teamwork, morals, work ethics, and attendance. But my department
manager was not exemplary in applying these policies. My manager was consistently absent at
the manufacturing site but only showed up in total dissatisfaction when there was a defect
(quality concern) reported about the manufactured units.
