, What is Bacteriophage
Typing?
Bacteriophage typing is a method used to identify bacterial strains based on their susceptibility to specific
bacteriophages (viruses that infect bacteria).
How It Works:
Bacteriophages: Each phage infects only certain bacterial species or strains.
Process:
A bacterial culture is grown on an agar plate.
Drops of different bacteriophages are applied.
If a bacteriophage infects the bacteria, clear zones (plaques) form, indicating lysis (bacterial
death).
Result: By observing which bacteriophages form plaques, you can identify the bacterial strain.
Applications:
Idntifying bacterial pathogens (e.g., Salmonella or Staphylococcus aureus).
Tracking outbreaks of infections.
Understanding bacterial resistance patterns.
