Assignment 3 Semester 1 2026
Due Date: 17 April 2026
Determining Suitable Coffee Growing Areas in the Greater Tzaneen Municipality
1. Introduction
The Greater Tzaneen Municipality is located in the Limpopo Province of South Africa within
the Mopani District. The area is well known for its agricultural activities due to its favourable
climate and natural resources. Crops such as citrus and subtropical fruits are already
produced in the region, and there is growing interest in expanding coffee production. Arabica
coffee requires specific environmental conditions, and this study aims to identify suitable
areas within the municipality.
The study area is shown in Figure 1 below, which illustrates the location of the Greater
Tzaneen Municipality together with key spatial features such as roads and elevation. The
map also shows areas that are potentially suitable for coffee production based on the GIS
analysis.

The study area is shown in Figure 1 below, which illustrates the location of the

production based on the GIS analysis. These areas are mainly located in the
western and south-western parts of the municipality where elevation and vegetation
conditions are favourable.
The analysis focuses on important criteria such as elevation, land cover, and
accessibility. Coffee can only grow successfully within specific altitude ranges and
suitable land types, and it must be close enough to roads for transportation. By using
GIS tools, the study identifies areas that meet all these conditions.
