Higher level cognitive demand tasks involve many skills. Understanding, analyzing
information and applying it, and evaluating strategies are all characteristics of tasks that
demand higher level thinking (Van de Walle, Karp, & Bay-Williams, 2019a.). In order to
promote higher level cognitive thinking, the teacher must problem opportunities for the
students to reason. The students have to be able to make sense of the material in order to make
connections and engage with conceptual ideas so that they are successfully able to complete
the task at hand.
The problem that I chose for higher level cognitive think is the following received from
teachers pay teachers (tpt.com). This problem is one that I use in my current classroom for our
daily math warmup.
