State of Michigan Emergency Preparedness and Response
The State of Michigan has an Office of Emergency Management that is held under a
division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services. The division of Homeland Security
and Emergency Services oversees Michigan’s safety, well-being, environmental factors unique
to the state of Michigan include the five great lakes and the current emergent COVID-19
guidelines. There is an online handbook that provides interactive assistance to reduce chaos
during emergencies and diesters (Thacher, 2005). Likewise, the online handbook on the website
details local information that can be further specified by zip code to find information for various
disaster plans, evacuation routes, and medical services specific to given communities (Mace,
2018).
As the current pandemic predominates most of the Emergency Management, previous
management was managed with a Ready Campaign. The Ready Campaign was launched in
2003 as a national public service to educate and empower citizens to become prepared,
equipped, and properly respond to emergencies (Ready.gov, 2019). The goal of the campaign is
based on making a family emergency kit, building an emergency kit, staying informed about
emergencies and given responses, and action that can be taken within the community (2019).
