Introduction to Business Law
What is Business Law?
Business law (or commercial law) is the body of law that applies to business and commerce. It
encompasses contracts, torts, property, employment, and corporate law — regulating relationships
between businesses, consumers, employees, and the government.
Sources of Law
• Constitutional Law — fundamental rights and government structure
• Statutory Law — laws passed by legislatures (Congress, state legislatures)
• Common Law — law developed through court decisions (precedent)
• Regulatory/Administrative Law — rules by agencies (SEC, FTC, OSHA)
• International Law — treaties and agreements between nations

Key Legal Concepts
Tort: A wrongful act or infringement of a right (other than contractual breach) causing harm;
may be intentional, negligent, or strict liability
Contract: A binding agreement between two or more parties to exchange promises or
perform/abstain from performance
Liability: Legal responsibility for one's actions; may be civil (damages to another party) or
criminal (punishment by the state)
Precedent: A legal decision that serves as an authority for deciding future cases with similar
facts
Due Process: Fair legal procedures and protections guaranteed by law; must follow established
rules and procedures
