PHL 218 Module Two Project Proposal
Economic Justice is the chosen topic that is a global ethical issue. Food security is the
theme that I will address within the chosen focus. Food is a fundamental thing that humans need
to live. Without the proper food and nutrients this is harmful to the body and mind, and the worst
it is causing death. Child malnutrition and starvation is an unnecessary issue that is happening
globally. The effects that this has on the cognitive development and physical development of a
child are related. The specific issue I will speak about it how malnutrition starvation is affecting
children as they grow.
The prominent ethical dilemma with food security is, how is it still happening? The
number of resources and options that are provided currently in the modern world, this issue
should still not exist. Every 10 seconds we lose a child to hunger (Sherran 2011). Those children
who are not dying and are barely maintaining life, their bodies and minds are depleting rapidly.
The food they do receive doesn’t have the nutritional factors that are needed for proper
development. The result of this issue is that children have weakened immune systems, and they
are unable to fight off bacteria and viruses due to their weak bodies. They also face impaired
brain development which can cause them to lack the ability to learn. As children grow the
essential vitamins and nutrients make their bones and muscles grow properly. Without this, they
can face deformities, vision loss, and muscle loss. The proper food and nutrition are essential for
all humans, but growing children suffer horribly as their mind and bodies will forever be
affected.
