Area of assessment 2 (AA2) – Analysis of performance
Introduction
My chosen sport for A level PE is Association Football, and I play as a
defensive midfielder (CDM). My context is:

As a centre defensive midfielder, my positioning is usually in central areas
of the pitch, where my main responsibilities involve tackling, intercepting,
and making clearances making them more applicable to my role. This is
because in my role, I act as the first line of defence during counter
attacks, with the intention of winning back possession for my team. The
skill of heading is the least applicable to my role as central defenders are
typically responsible for dealing with most defensive aerial challenges.
However, heading is vital as a centre defensive midfielder during goal
kicks, where the ball is often delivered into the central area. Winning the
header is crucial to gain possession and preventing the opposition from
getting up the pitch.
The skill that I believe is the most applicable to me is tackling; this is
because in the centre of the pitch the ball is usually played on the ground
with their attacker or midfielder dribbling towards our defence line so to
stop them from overloading the defence it’s my main responsibility to
prevent that by tacking them.
Tackling and Heading are strengths and therefore not applicable.
Having analysed my performance, I’ve identified that my biggest AA2
weakness is the skill of the clearance. ‘Clearance’ is described through
height and distance in the core skill, which is where my poor technique of
how and where I contact the ball and my follow through impacts my ability
to get good height and distance on the clearance.
In advanced skills, clearance is the ability to then also find a teammate
higher up the pitch, which is where my hesitation in decision making
comes in as I need to be able to scan and be aware before I perform the
movement to be able change my body position and direct my pass
towards a teammate.

As a central defensive midfielder being able to clear the ball effectively up
the pitch by getting good height and distance is extremely important to
help relieve pressure from the defence and to stop the other team from
being able to exploit positioning weaknesses and be able to attack quickly
again. It is also important that when clearing the ball, I’m able to find a
teammate higher up the pitch to be able to regain possession to allow our
team to get back in to shape and prevent the other team from attacking
quickly again. After assessing my footage and through the use of intrinsic
and extrinsic feedback during and after a game, I’ve identified that my
decision making and technique on performing the clearance is ineffective
causing me to lose possession.
It’s clear that when I’m assessing a situation, I hesitate before I clear it
which then directly impacts my body positioning and foot placement,
consequently, causing my technique to be poor as I don’t connect with the
ball properly using my laces. This means that the ball doesn’t get enough
height and distance and usually turns over possession instead of finding a
teammate higher up the pitch to keep possession. If I improve my
clearances, it means our team will be able to regain possession and
especially later in a game, it relieves pressure from our defence to stop
them from becoming tired, resulting in less goals conceded.
Preparation
When I’m defending, I’m usually positioned centrally in front of my
defenders, retreating back into our own half which allows me to prevent
the attack if the ball is travelling through the middle which is where the
chance is highest of them having a shot on goal. When the attacker is
trying to break the line of defence, my body position is with my back to
our goal or side on to be able to intercept and clear it away from the
danger either up the pitch or out for a throw. Similarly, closer to my own
goal when clearing the ball in a dangerous area my body position is facing
up the pitch with my back to our goal to get it up the pitch. In my
particular scenario, the ball is coming from the right corner with the
winger pulling the ball back towards the penalty spot. I was covering right
to left and as I realised the attacker had missed the ball, it allowed me to
make the clearance. In this scenario, the goal was to my left and as the
ball was travelling towards me, I had kept my head down focused on the
ball. Instead, I should be scanning to get to the point where my clearance
is not only effective with height and distance but I’m able to find a
teammate as well.
Often my body position is incorrect when I have to clear it up the pitch.
Starting with my feet, my mass is usually on the heels of my feet as I’m
retreating backwards which can cause me to be off balance. My ankle is
usually in dorsi flexion which further causes me to be off balance, causing
my contact with the ball to be poor as I’m unable to produce power to
gain the height and distance in the clearance. Instead, I should have my

centre of mass on the balls and toes of my feet which will allow me to be
more stable in my position to produce more power in my clearance. My
ankle should be in plantar flexion so I contact the ball with my laces to
produce height and distance. My standing knee is usually slightly flexed,
and my kicking knee is in flexion to help produce power in my clearance.
Instead, my standing knee should be in extension and my kicking knee in
flexion to maximise the power and height and allow my foot to get under
the ball. My hip is usually slightly extended with my kicking leg and in
flexion for my standing leg with my head leaning over the ball which
causes my clearance to be ineffective as there is no height produced.
Instead, my hip should be more extended, and I should be slightly leaning
back to allow my kicking foot to make contact on the underside of the ball
with my laces which will allow me to get height on the ball as well as
power. Also, my body position is quite closed off as my back is arched and
there is no rotation in my hips to allow me to extend my hip fully and face
in the direction in which I want to ball to go. This makes it harder for me
to contact the ball with my laces whereas my hips and body should be
more open to allow for a better connection. This was because as I was
moving towards the ball I had kept my head down, focused on the ball,
whereas I should be looking up and scanning to find a teammate.

Hip is in extension ‘rodeo arm’ to provide Hip is in slight flexion with
