QUESTION 1
Organisational learning is important to the success and survival of organisations and Abil was
clearly not good at it.
Question 1.1
According to Jones and Hill (2013), the organisational learning process takes place through three
phases. These are:
i. Individuals learning phase – This is a phase which happens in four different cycles
namely concrete experience, thinking and reflecting, abstract conceptualization and
active experimentation.
ii. Knowledge transfer phase – In this phase, learning is shared in the organisation until
it becomes commonly accepted practice or knowledge. Knowledge is transferred as
either explicit or tacit knowledge through socialization, combination, internalization
and articulation.
iii. Knowledge application phase - The learning is applied to strategic decisions and
management practices in the organisation. It starts becoming an organisational
capability.
Question 1.2
The three main barriers of organizational learning that led to the collapse of Abil are:
1. Dominant general management logic.
This stems from the way managers conceptualise their business. According to the case study, the
CEO of Abil Mr. Leon Kirkinis had an overwhelming influence over the board and the
operations of the bank. Essentially, no one questioned him. He made decisions about the strategy
and resources based on 'dominant' logic. This is proof that though ironic, the more successful an
organisation is, the more difficult it often is to change its dominant logic.
