Patterning of mental illness my gender.
• Data from national surveys.
• See slides for graphs / data. E.G., 22% of girls aged 17-19 have emotional
disorder, roughly 1 in every 4.
• Sexuality and mental health - Amongst 14-19 year olds: 13.2% heterosexuals
reported chronic depression. 34.9% non-heterosexuals* reported chronic
depression
• Seeing higher percentages amongst women.
• Higher suicide rates amongst men (see slide). From 1980s, general decline in
suicides, but raise particularly in 2018.
Why is it the case that we are seeing these differences? How can we explain it
sociology? What is it about mens/women’s lives that can help us explain the
differences.
