Coherence in the
Interpretation of Discourse
, Coherence
Meaning of a communicative
message will not be understood only
on the grounds of the words and
structures used in a text to convey
that message.
Although a text producer may
produce a perfectly grammatical
sentence from which we can derive a
literal interpretation, we may not
claim to have understood the text,
simply because we need more or a
different kind of information.
, Coherence
COHERENCE - has to do with the
logical stability of a text.
A piece of text is said to be coherent
when the sentences, ideas, and
details in it fit together clearly, and
the receiver can follow along easily.
The ideas presented in the text tie
together smoothly and clearly.
