Speech, in whatever shape, is
normally characterized by formal
characteristics and presents a
manifestation of a certain genre.
Genres may vary in terms of the
number and explicitness of
formal markers.

This is one of the basic features
of conversation, the fact that
the participants change their
roles of speaker-listener.
Normally, at least and no more
than one party speaks at a
time in order to avoid overlaps
and pauses.

Each party speaks in its turn
successively, but if this
balance is disturbed (more
than one or no one speaks),
the participants tend to
restore the balance
