McCulloch v Maryland (1819)

In 1818, the state of Maryland passed an Act which
would impose a tax on banks that were mot created by
the Maryland government. The only bank it would have

, taxed would have been the Second Bank of the United
States, created 2 years before this. The verdict was
that Congress has implied powers to set up a bank in
any state it deemed necessary.
Federal-state relationship

Obama passed the Deferred Action for Childhood
Arrivals and Deferred Action for Parents of Americans
which protected immigrants from deportation, this was
reversed by Trump, but certain sanctuary cities have
limited co-operation with the federal government and
so can prohibit governmental interference. In 2018,
California passed the state Senate Bill 54 which
prohibited local and state law enforcement from using
personnel to arrest people for federal immigration
purposes.
Filibuster reforms

1917 – the first cloture rule was adopted provided the
approval of the Senators present

1949 – the cloture rule was amended for a 2/3 vote of
the whole senate membership

1959 – the cloture rule applies a 2/3 majority to those
present

1975 – the number of approves senators was reduced
from 66 to 60
