What is the difference between CMTO Policy statements, Position statements, and
Guidelines? A breach of which one would result in professional misconduct? - Correct
Answer-Policies "must do"- These are definitive rules set out by the CMTO. "These
policies provide RMTs with a broader explanation of practice issues than can be found
in the legal format of the corresponding regulation. They have been developed to
protect the safety of the Ontario public. RMTs who violate any policies of the College
may be deemed to have violated a regulation(s), and therefore to have committed
professional misconduct."
Position statements "suggestion" - Rules that requires reasonable justification in the
event an RMT has decided to deviate from the position of the CMTO. "A position
statement provides the collective opinion of the College's Council relating to practice
issues, which may not be covered by a regulation or policy. Position statements (listed
at left) are often developed in response to registrants' questions and provide a
framework within which practice decisions can be made. Registrants whose practice is
not consistent with the position outlined by the College may be required to justify their
conduct or actions."
Guidelines - A practical approach to policies and positions in practice, and general
views of what the CMTO deems appropriate. "Guidelines and Bulletins (listed below)
provide a more detailed description of the way in which a policy or position is translated
into practice. They are intended to provide additional guidance to registrants."
