Klaus Schwab explains the Fourth Industrial Revolution as a major shift where people no
longer operate in separate spaces like before. In earlier periods, the physical world, digital
systems, and biological life were mostly treated as different areas. In this new revolution,
these areas are merging. This means individuals now move across these domains at the
same time in their daily lives. For example, people use digital tools to manage physical
activities and even interact with biological systems through technologies such as health
tracking or biotechnology. Because of this fusion, the way people live, work, and relate to
others is becoming more interconnected and complex than before (Schwab, 2015).
Schwab also gives three clear reasons why the Fourth Industrial Revolution is not just a
continuation of the Third Industrial Revolution.
The first reason is velocity. The speed of change today is much faster than in the
past. New technologies are developing at an exponential rate, not slowly over time.
