Digestion refers to the breakdown of food molecules into smaller components that can be
absorbed into the bloodstream and used by the cells in the form of nutrition.
There are two kinds of digestion: mechanical (physical) digestion and chemical digestion.
Ingestion is the consumption of a substance by an organism.

The human digestive system consists of
1. the gastrointestinal tract
2. plus the accessory organs of digestion
Gastrointestinal tract (GI) or gut: The GI tract is a series of hollow organs joined in a long,
twisting tube from the mouth to the anus. Itis an organ system which takes in food, digests it to
extract and absorb energy and nutrients, and expels the remaining waste as feces and urine.
Parts of GI tract:
Mouth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, rectum, anus.
Accessory parts:
Teeth, tongue, salivary glands, liver, gall bladder, pancreas
