Question 1: Professional Conduct, Engineering Activities and Ethics
Engineering is fundamentally a design discipline practised within a biophysical environment,
and its activities carry both positive and negative consequences for society and nature (ECSA,
2019). Engineers are therefore bound by professional standards that require them to act with
competence, integrity, and environmental awareness in every aspect of their work.
1.1 Nine Activities Where Engineering Work is Included
Question: According to professional conduct and accreditation in engineering, briefly explain
nine activities where engineering work is included.
Answer:
According to the Engineering Profession Act 46 of 2000 and ECSA’s Identification of Engi-
neering Work (IDoEW) regulations, engineering work encompasses a wide range of activities
that require registered professional oversight (ECSA, 2021).
1. Research and Development
Engineers conduct systematic investigation and experimentation to generate new knowl-
edge or improve existing technologies. This includes laboratory research, prototype test-
ing, and feasibility studies aimed at developing innovative solutions to complex engineer-
ing problems.
2. Design and Planning
This is the core skill of an engineer and involves the conceptualisation, specification, and
detailed design of systems, structures, processes, and products. Design integrates scien-
tific principles, safety requirements, and environmental considerations to produce technical
solutions.
3. Construction and Manufacturing
Engineers oversee and direct the physical realisation of designed systems. This includes
supervising building construction, factory production processes, infrastructure develop-
ment, and ensuring that work is executed in conformance with approved drawings and
specifications.
4. Testing and Commissioning
Before any engineered system is handed over for operation, engineers conduct systematic
testing to verify that performance meets design requirements. Commissioning involves ac-
