Electroencephalogram (EEG)
, An electroencephalogram (EEG) is a non-invasive, painless diagnostic test that records the
electrical activity of the brain using small metal discs (electrodes) which are attached to the
scalp. It is primarily used to diagnose epilepsy, sleep disorders, a stroke, brain damage and monitoring
brain activity in a coma. It detects any abnormal wave patterns which indicate various neurological
conditions.
There are different types of EEG including:
- Routine (short-term),
- Sleep (sleep deprived or polysommography)
- Ambulatory portable EEG, long term (24 hours)
