Physical Exam - Head, Face, Neck - ANSWERS-A. Inspect & palpate skull
-- general size and contour
-- note any deformities, lumps, tenderness
-- palpate temporal artery, termporomandibular joint
B. Inspect the face
-- expression
-- symmetry (cranial nerve VII)
-- involuntary movements
-- abnormal structure
-- edema
-- masses or lesions
-- color and texture
C. Inspect the neck
1. symmetry -- arthritis
2. Range of motion -- active
-- note any limitation of movement during active motion
-- ask person to touch chin to chest, turn head to right and left, try to touch each ear with
shoulder
-- have person extend head backward
3. Test strength of cervical muscles
-- try to resist the person's movements with your hands as the person shrugs the shoulders and
turns the head to the side

5. Enlargement of thyroid gland
6. Enlargement of lymph & salivary glands
D. Palpate the lymph nodes
-- method = gentle circular motion
-- begin with preaunicular lymph node in front of ear
-- palpate 10 groups of lymph nodes in routine order

-- is it centered in the middle of the neck?
F. Palpate the thyroid gland

* usually both sides, across frontal, temporal and or occipital region of head
* bandlike tightness, viselike, non throbbing, non pulsating
* gradual onset, last 30 mins to days
* situational -- in response to stress
* not worsened by physical activity
