Definition
TMJ is a synovial joint between the mandibular condyle and the temporal bone. It is the only
movable joint of the skull.
Type
• Synovial joint
• Modified hinge joint (ginglymoarthrodial)
• Combination of hinge + gliding movements
Parts of TMJ
• Articular surfaces: Mandibular condyle, Articular eminence
• Articular disc: Fibrous disc dividing joint into upper & lower compartments
• Joint capsule
• Ligaments: Lateral, Sphenomandibular, Stylomandibular

• Depression & Elevation (Opening/Closing)
• Protrusion & Retrusion
• Lateral movements
