Chapter 1
The Ever-Evolving World of Science
1. Why does rice cook faster in a pressure cooker than in an open vessel?
Answer-Food cooks faster in a pressure cooker than in an open vessel because the
pressure cooker traps steam, raising the internal pressure and allowing water to boil at
temperatures higher than 100 °C.
2. Why has nature created such a vast variety of plants and animals?
Answer:-Nature has created a vast variety of plants and animals to maintain balance in
ecosystems.
3. What symbols are used in the book to represent deep knowledge and imagination,
respectively?
Answer:-A root at the bottom of the left pages represents deep knowledge, and a kite on top
of the right pages represents curiosity and imagination.
4. What is the importance of curiosity in Science?
Answer:- Curiosity is the starting point of Science. Asking “why” and “how” helps us begin
investigations and discover new knowledge.
5. What happens why turmeric pasted paper is tested with detergent solution and
lemon juice? Why?
Answer- The yellow colour of the turmeric pasted paper changes into reddish-brown when
tested with detergent solution, but no change in colour when tested with lemon juice.
6. What does it mean to investigate like a scientist?
Answer:-It means asking specific questions, designing controlled experiments, making
observations, measuring, and drawing conclusions one step at a time.

EXTRA QUESTIONS-

Assertion Reason Questions-

Q1. Assertion (A): Scientific exploration often leads to more questions rather than just final
answers.
Reason (R): In science, every discovery is considered the end of learning.
(a) Both A and R are true, and R is the correct explanation of A.
(b) Both A and R are true, but R is not the correct explanation of A.
(c) A is true, but R is false.
(d) A is false, and R is also false.
Answer: (c) A is true, but R is false.
Explanation: Scientific exploration encourages continuous questioning and deeper inquiry; it
never signifies the end of learning.

Q2. Assertion (A): Early observations of bird wings and paper planes contributed to the
development of real aircrafts.
Reason (R): Curiosity and simple experiments have historically driven major technological
innovations.
(a) Both A and R are true, and R is the correct explanation of A.
(b) Both A and R are true, but R is not the correct explanation of A.
(c) A is true, but R is false.
(d) A is false, and R is also false.
Answer: (a) Both A and R are true, and R is the correct explanation of A.
Explanation: Early inspirations from natural observations (like bird wings) and simple
experiments (like paper planes) led to advances in real aviation.

Q3. Assertion (A): The interconnection of different fields of science allows discoveries in one
area to inspire questions in another.
Reason (R): Chemistry and biology are completely independent fields with no overlap.
(a) Both A and R are true, and R is the correct explanation of A.
(b) Both A and R are true, but R is not the correct explanation of A.
(c) A is true, but R is false.
(d) A is false, and R is also false.
Answer: (c) A is true, but R is false.
Explanation: Different branches of science are interconnected; for example, chemical
processes are vital to biological systems.

Q4. Assertion (A): Understanding scientific processes also helps students become more
responsible towards environmental challenges.
