NURS 6521 - Advanced Pharmacology, Week 8 Discussion: In the year 2009, the United Nations Joint Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) estimated that 33.3 million of HIV-positive people would be living with HIV by 2009 and 34 million people by 2011. Since this estimation, the figure has suggested an increase of 17% over the figures reported ten years earlier. This increase is probably due to improvements in the life expectancy of people living with HIV/AIDS and the access to antiretroviral drugs (Memish, Filemban, Bamgboyel, Al Hakeem, Elrashied& Al-Tawfiq, 2015). More people are becoming infected while a smaller number of people are dying from the disease due to the potency in the combination antiretroviral therapy (ART) (Arcangelo& Peterson, 2013)..........
