ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY LAB 7 HISTOLOGY OF EPITHEALIAL TISSUE

Histology: the study of tissues and how they are arranged (microscopic anatomy)

- Important for understanding the physiology of the body

Tissue: made up of cells and matrixs

- Made up of similar cells that come together to form a tissue which performs a specific function

Cells are the smallest units of life that carry out a specific function

Muscle cell: muscle contraction

Tissues group together to form an organ

Cells  tissue  organ

Organ: structure that performs a job depending on the types of cells and arrangement of tissues

Tissue types:

1. Epithelial tissue: functions in secretion and absorption, roles of protection and secretion of
waste
2. Connective tissue: help to bind tissues together and anchors organs to body cavities) supportive
role)
3. Nervous tissue: specialized and serves the role of communication for the nervous system
4. Muscular tissue: specialized for muscle contraction and general movement

Tissue composition – Tissues contain matrix

Matrix: extracellular material

- Made up of a ground substance (extracellular fluid)
- Water nutrients, minerals, gases
- Contains protein fibers

Fertilization:

- Fertilized egg
- Small cells divide and group themselves into 3 primary germ layers

Germ layer

1. Ectoderm: arrangement of tissue that gives rise to the epidermis and the nervous tissue
