MARKING SCJHEME
UNIBADAN TAE 310 EXAMINATION QUESTIONS 20232024 PART B MARKING SCHEME
1
, Question One (15 Marks)
An equipment parking yard has a length of 75 m and a width of 25 m. It is presently planted with
grass but it is proposed that it should be concreted. The thickness of the floor when dried is
expected to be 35 cm. As a result of the type of equipment to be parked there, it is assumed that a
concrete with mix ratio of 1:2: 4 by volume should be used.
Assuming a 25.0 % decrease in volume and 4.0 % wastage of materials to be provided for the
construction
Making reference to the information provided on the Design Manual, calculate the amount of
each of the following materials to be made available for the job.
i) 50 kg bags of cement. {3 marks}
ii) Sand in tonne. {3 marks}
iii) Gravel in tonne. {3 marks}
iv) Amount of water assuming that one bag of cement will require 150 litres of water {1 mark}
v) Using the prices given for the various materials, calculate the total cost of getting all the
materials needed for the construction. {5 marks}
Marking Scheme
Step 1: Calculate the final volume of the concrete (Vc)
Vc = Length x breadth x thickness
= 75 m x 25 m x 0.35 m = 656.25m3 { 1 Mark}
Step 2: Calculate the volume of materials to be supplied (Vm)
Vm = ( 1 + 0.25 + 0.04) x Vc
= 1.29 x 656.25 = 846.56 m3 { 1 Mark}
Step 3: Calculate the volume of each of the components
The volume of each component is calculated from the general formula
x Volume of materials
Sum of ratios of all components = 1 + 2 + 4 = 7
{ 1 Mark}
