THROUGH PSYCHOSOCIAL SUPPORT AT MORETELE SERVICE POINT
ABSTRACT
This proposal presents a group work programme to be implemented at Moretele
Service Point, Department of Social Development. The proposed group will focus on
unemployed women from vulnerable households who are receiving services from the
organisation and who need psychosocial support, empowerment, information sharing
and practical coping skills. The need for the group is based on the organisation’s
work with families affected by poverty, unemployment, family stress and limited
access to resources. The group will be a treatment and support group aimed at
strengthening members’ self-awareness, confidence, problem-solving abilities and
knowledge of available social services. The group will also create a safe space
where members can share experiences, reduce isolation and learn from one
another. The programme will be guided by ethical principles such as confidentiality,
informed consent, respect, self-determination and non-discrimination. It will also
promote transformation and social justice by empowering marginalised women to
understand their rights, access services and participate more actively in improving
their lives. The group will be conducted under the support of Moretele Service Point,
which provides social welfare services to vulnerable individuals, families and
communities. The proposal outlines the purpose of the group, the needs
assessment, membership, recruitment, group composition, orientation, contract,
logistical arrangements, environment and budget. The proposed group work
intervention is therefore intended to respond to a collective need within the
community through structured, ethical and empowering social work practice.

1.1 Ethical Considerations
Ethical considerations are central to the implementation of the proposed group work
programme at Moretele Service Point. The group will be guided by core ethical
principles such as confidentiality, informed consent, respect, and professional
responsibility. Confidentiality will be maintained by ensuring that all information
shared within the group remains private and is not disclosed outside the group
without permission, except in cases where there is a risk of harm (National
Association of Social Workers, 2008). Members will be informed about the limits of
confidentiality at the beginning of the programme to promote transparency and trust.
Informed consent will be obtained from all participants before they join the group.
Members will be provided with clear information about the purpose of the group, the
nature of participation, and their right to withdraw at any stage without negative
consequences (Kirst-Ashman, 2017). Respectful communication will be encouraged
to ensure that all members feel safe and valued during interactions.
Ethical dilemmas may arise, particularly when dealing with sensitive issues such as
domestic violence or financial hardship. These will be addressed through supervision
and adherence to professional guidelines. The group facilitator will follow established
ethical codes and organisational policies to ensure that decisions are fair and in the
best interests of the members (Zastrow, 2017).

The proposed group aims to promote both personal and social transformation among
its members by empowering them to improve their life circumstances.
