1. Definitions
#Plant Pathology:(Phytopathology): The branch of agricultural
science that studies the causes of plant diseases, the mechanisms by
which they occur, and the methods used to manage them.
It is derived from Greek words: Phyton (plant) + Pathos
(suffering/ailment) + Logos (study/knowledge).
2. Historical Significance (Major Epidemics)
Plant diseases have altered human history by causing severe
famines:
i)Irish Potato Famine (1845):
Caused by Phytophthora infestans (Late Blight of Potato). Led to
mass starvation and migration in Ireland.
ii)Bengal Famine (1943):
#Caused by Helminthosporium oryzae (Brown Spot of Rice).
Contributed to the death of millions in undivided Bengal.
iii)Coffee Rust in Sri Lanka (1867): Caused by Hemileia vastatrix.
Forced Sri Lanka to switch from coffee to tea cultivation.
3. Key Pioneers:
i)Anton de Bary: The "Father of Plant Pathology." He proved that
fungi are the causes of plant diseases, not the result of them.
ii)E.J. Butler: The "Father of Indian Plant Pathology." He initiated
systematic research on plant diseases in India.
