Exercise 1
Calculate the percent error between your calculated ΔHcomb values from steps 48
and 49 to the actual values of ΔHcomb for fat or sugar using the following equation.
The actual values of ΔHcomb are –30 038 kJ/mol (fat) and –5639 kJ/mol (sugar).

\(\text{percent error}\ =\ |\frac{calculated\ -\ actual}{actual}|\ \times100\%\ \)

Fat percentage: 0.76%
Sugar Percentage: 0.43%

Was the combustion of sugar endothermic or exothermic? Explain how this
reaction was measured in the bomb calorimeter in your response.

The combustion of sugar is exothermic reaction because it releases heat to the
surroundings. To get this I measured in a bomb calorimeter by placing a weighed sample
of sugar in a sealed chamber filled with oxygen, then igniting it which caused the
temperature of the surrounding water bath to increase, which is related to the amount of
heat released during the combustion process.

, Suppose the temperature measured in a calorimeter decreased over the
course of a reaction. Was this reaction endothermic or exothermic? How do
you know?

If the temperature measured in a calorimeter decreased during a reaction, then the
reaction is considered endothermic. This is because an endothermic reaction absorbs
heat from its surroundings which causes the temperature of the calorimeter to drop

Kilojoules can be converted to Calories using the following conversion:

\(1 \text{ Calorie}\ =\ 4.184 \text{ kJ}\)

Using your value of q from Trial 1 in the first column of Tables 1 and 2,
calculate how many Calories were in your first samples of fat and sugar. Note that
Calories are only presented as positive numbers. Which food source would be more
effective for a sustained fuel?

Fat: 8.03 Calories

Sugar: 3.79 Calories
