Topic Vital signs
Vital signs are also cardinal signs, they are used in detecting any Abnormalities
in the body system. There are 5 cardinal signs which are Blood pressure(BP),
temperature(T), Pulse(P), Respiration( R) and oxygen saturation rate(SpO2)
Purpose of vital signs
◦ To obtain baseline data on admission
◦ To monitor effectiveness of therapy
◦ To identify life threatening emergencies
Temperature : This is the degree of hotness and coldness of the body, it refers to
the balance between heat production and heat loss. It is measured in degree Celsius
or kelvin The normal body temperature is within the range 36.2-37.2 all in degree
Celsius
Various Regions of the body where temperature can be checked
◦ Axillary ( Armpit)
◦ Rectal
◦ Tympanic
◦ Oral
Abnormalities
◦ Hypothermia : Body temperature less than 35 degrees Celsius
◦ Hyperthermia : Body temperature greater than 40 degrees Celsius
