1.2 Briefly explain the concept of workforce diversity and state two organisational
benefits of managing diversity effectively. (5 marks)
1.3 Examine the following statements and indicate whether each is TRUE (T) or
FALSE (F) by writing only the letter: (a) A glass ceiling is beneficial to organ-
isations. (b) Physical appearance is NOT a source of diversity. (c) Effective
diversity management can improve organisational effectiveness. (d) Social class and
income are sources of diversity. (e) Diverse people must receive equal opportunities
and unfair discrimination is illegal. (5 marks)

1.1 Two Sources of Diversity

• Race/ethnicity – the report typically highlights the racial composition of the
workforce (e.g., percentage of Black African, Coloured, Indian/Asian, and White
employees), reflecting demographic diversity.
• Gender – human capital highlights routinely report on the male/female split and
female representation in management, indicating gender diversity as a managed
dimension.


1.2 Workforce Diversity & Benefits

Definition: Workforce diversity refers to the differences among employees in terms of
age, gender, race, ethnicity, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, physical ability,
and other characteristics that distinguish one person from another.
Two organisational benefits of effective diversity management:

• Improved decision-making and creativity: Diverse teams bring varied per-
spectives, leading to more creative problem-solving and better decisions, as different
viewpoints are considered.
• Broader market reach: A diverse workforce better reflects the organisation’s
