Poetry Analysis & Grammar Mastery
Part 1: Poem Summaries (Flamingo/Standard)
1. My Mother at Sixty-Six (Kamala Das)
Theme: Fear of loss, aging, and the pain of separation.
Summary: While driving to the airport, the poet notices her mother dozing off, looking pale
as a "corpse." To distract herself from the painful thought of her mother's mortality, she looks
at "young trees sprinting" (symbolizing life/energy). She says goodbye with a smile, hiding her
childhood fear.
Literary Devices: Simile ("pale as a late winter’s moon"), Metaphor ("trees sprinting").
2. Keeping Quiet (Pablo Neruda)
Theme: Universal brotherhood, peace, and introspection.
Summary: The poet asks everyone to stop all activity and remain silent for a count of twelve.
This "exotic moment" would allow humans to stop hurting nature (whales) and themselves
(salt-gatherers). He clarifies that silence is not "total inactivity" (death) but a way to restart life
with better understanding.
3. A Thing of Beauty (John Keats)
Theme: The eternal joy provided by nature.
Summary: A beautiful thing provides endless joy and never fades into "nothingness." It acts
as a "quiet bower" (shade) that helps us cope with the "despondence" and "gloomy days" of
life. Beauty is found in the sun, moon, old trees, and even the stories of "mighty dead"
ancestors.
