Business Management (NQF Level 5)
1. Purpose and Structure of the Module
The module introduces students to the fundamentals of business management,
including the relationship between organisations and management, the evolution of
management theory, levels of management, core management areas, and
contemporary management issues.
It is a 15-credit module at NQF Level 5, used across various business-related degree
and certificate programmes.
2. Learning Outcomes
Understand and describe fundamental management principles and practices.
Demonstrate the concept of organisation and management functions.
Explain the evolution of management theory and its relevance today.
Differentiate between levels of management and their activities.
Apply core management areas, roles, and skills in context.
Discuss the relationship between management processes and their environments.
Develop frameworks for ethical decision-making on contemporary management
issues.
Undertake autonomous and guided research in business management.
3. Core Content Areas
a. Nature and Definition of Management
Management is defined as the process of planning, organising, leading, and
controlling organisational resources to achieve goals efficiently and effectively.
The four core management functions (POLC): Planning, Organising, Leading,
Controlling.
b. Levels of Management
Top Management: Strategic, long-term focus (e.g., CEO, Board of Directors).
Middle Management: Implements policies and strategies, medium-term focus (e.g.,
Department Heads).
