FERC: About FERC - What FERC Does

Give this one a try later!

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, or FERC, is an independent
agency that regulates the interstate transmission of electricity, natural gas,
and oil. FERC also reviews proposals to build liquefied natural gas (LNG)
terminals and interstate natural gas pipelines as well as licensing
hydropower projects.

Regulates transmission and wholesale sales of electricity, the transmission
and sale of natural gas for resale in interstate commerce, transportation of
oil by pipeline in interstate commerce, Licenses and inspects private,
municipal, and state hydroelectric projects and many more.

Two schools of environmental thought

, 1. NeoMalthusians: Humans are in trouble and there is a carrying capacity.
War, famine, disease will stable population and innovation CAN help but
careless people can ruin it i.e. nuclear weapons, over fishing.
2. Cornucopians: People and technology are the ultimate resource.
Restricting people on earth restricts a possible Einstein.

American Cities Are Booming—For Rich Young College Grads Without Kids

Give this one a try later!

Rich educated young people without kids are moving to cities. In the
meantime, if you are a 20- or 30-something white college graduate without
children earning more than 60 percent of the country, it might seem to you
like everybody is moving to the cities. That might be because the only
micro-demographic that's pouring into cities is the one that perfectly
describes you.

Building a Green Economy
Paul Krugman

-If we continue the way that we are with emissions, the results will be
apocalyptic. To avoid this, we must wean off/stop using fossil fuels and
coal.
-In an environmental economic stand point, both sides must benefit. Much
of the inaction of the government and businesses to reduce global
warming and greenhouse gases is due to specific interest groups and not
due to economic downfall. Someone is going to have to pay for negative
externalities and this can be done through direct regulation of actions that
cause pollution.
-Overall, we need market incentives to reduce emissions, if we don't we will
end up paying for it in disaster-some ways.

, Example: acid rain in the 80s was an ecological catastrophe but is mostly a
nonissue today. The government sulfur emission imposed regulation for
only new plants, since upgrading older plants would have been incredibly
inefficient.

Infectious diseases and Human Population History
Dobson, Andrew and Robin Carper

Give this one a try later!

-Populations grow and become sufficient to sustain epidemics of new
pathogens
-Pathogens arise as population grows and becomes more dense
-More diseases arise as life became more sedentary/inactive
-It is essential that policy for disease control strategies in the twenty-first
century build upon this understanding of diseases at the population level as
well as at the molecular and cellular level.

Social Movements and Climate Change

- The world is on track to experience an average increase in air temperature
of four to six degrees Celsius over pre-industrial levels, according to recent
analysis by the International Energy Agency
- declines in biodiversity; desertification; and more severe droughts and
floods, among its effects.
- people don't feel a sense of urgency
- need student activism

, Inside the New Technology That Could Transform the Solar Power Industry
Justin Worland

Give this one a try later!

The future of solar power has looked increasingly bright in recent years
thanks to the plummeting cost of silicon solar panels and a global push for
clean energy sources to address climate change.

But now new research into a class of materials known as perovskites
underway in U.S. government labs and other facilities around the world
promises to accelerate rapidly even the most optimistic projections for
solar deployment. If they make it from the lab to commercial use
perovskites could dramatically change the market for the renewable
energy source offering potential for panels to capture energy virtually any
surface facing the sun.

Perovskite solar cells are flexible and easy to produce. They can be painted
or sprayed on a surface from an ink solution or churned out of a printer like
a newspaper. That flexibility means they can be attached to virtually
anywhere. Ultimately, perovskites may not be a solution that transforms
solar energy. They face a slew of challenges, from outdoor weather
conditions to entering a crowded market. But clean energy experts say that
the federal government needs to continue investing in in different
technologies even if they cannot be certain that a particular one will
succeed.

Carbon Taxes Make Ireland Even Greener
Elizabeth Rosenthal

-Cap-n-trade, emission licenses, negative externality, The China Syndrome
(China emits more CO2 than the US per capita)
-The Irish government has imposed a tax on households and business upon
carbon emissions.
