, Executive Summary
This strength, weakness, opportunity and threat (SWOT) analysis takes a dive into the
athletic department at Midlothian High School (MHS), a rapidly expanding public school in
Midlothian ISD competing in UIL Class 5A. This analysis is shaped an educational, athletic, and
long-term outlook for MHS. Looking at MHS in this capacity allows for an objective point of view
that will emphasize safe, equitable, and financially sustainable athletic programs that not only
support current students but also contribute to the kind of school environment future children
will attend. With that lens and scope, understanding the internal and external factors
influencing MHS athletics becomes essential for responsible sport administration.
Midlothian High School has strengths in competitive performance and student
development that benefit the athletic culture of the school. The athletic culture is built on
discipline, academic accountability, and consistent expectations. The school’s facilities –
including a modern multi-sport stadium, new field houses, and updated weight rooms –
providing strong training environments across programs. Community support remains a major
asset, with high attendance, active booster involvement, and a rapidly growing population that
strengthens the school’s athletic identity. The strengths contribute to a stable foundation for
student engagement and long-term program tradition and growth.
In regards to the weaknesses for the school these things include: budget limitations,
reliance on booster financing, sharing of district facilities across multiple campuses and staffing.
First, budget limitations restrict flexibility in equipment, travel, and staffing. Booster fundraising
creates a disparity in resources and funds among the different sport programs. Midlothian ISD
multi-purpose stadium is shared with the cross-town high school. Spring sports contend for
practice facilities such as the practice and game fields. Multi-sport coaching, full time teaching
schedule and compensation make it difficult to retain specialized assistant coaches. Due to
some of these limitations the impact on athletic development and program continuity can
struggle.
Midlothian high school has major opportunities for growth. The district’s rapid
population increase expands participation, sponsorship potential, and event revenue. Enhanced
branding through social media forums, livestreaming with the NFHS network, and
merchandising are all opportunities to gain engagement that stay in the city and surrounding
due to the district alignment. With the adding so many people there is an opportunity for the
school to upgrade facilities with community support that is. Opportunities mentioned are great
for the community in the long-term and continues to leave room open for more addendums to
a community growth plan.
As there are many opportunities for growth there are some very important threats that
can pose challenges. Competition from surround 4A, 5A, 6A programs, and private schools.
These things can impact athlete retention and competitive success. Financial limitations and
economic pressures like the rising equipment, transportation, and insurance costs. Due to the
rising costs of equipment creates safety concerns involving concussions, injury preventions, and
medical support. UIL realignment may also increase travel demands and operational costs.
These things make it very important to have a plan for reliable and strong finances and
allocation that takes into account all sports and not just the sports that are the most popular.
Midlothian High School athletics is positioned for continued growth but must
strategically manage financial constraints, facility demands, and competitive pressures. By
leveraging community support, enhancing branding efforts, and planning for long-term facility
