Topic The subject of the text.
if topic not given, read the paragraph and look
for words or phrases that are repeated often.
NOTE: the word may be used once and then it
can be used using a different word.
ex. Mometrix, then it can be reffered as company,
or It throughtout the paragraph.
Main Idea -what the author wants to say about the topic
i.e. ask yourself how the author feels about that
topic
NOTE: most of the time fiction will have a theme,
and nonfiction will have a main idea.
-> main idea is at the very beginning or at the end
of the text.
Paraphrasing rewriting or restating another person's ideas or
thoughts into your own words

Inference conclusions that readers make using clues in
the text provided. it is different than making a
guess becuase it is based on evidence.
ex)- Caroline's toddler is in bed asleep upstairs.
she hears a loud thump and loud crying.
Infer- Caroline can infer that her toddler fell out
of bed.
TIP- must look for CONTEXTUAL clues. an answer
can be true but not correct. when picking an
answer choose an answer that has a similar
phrase to the statement in question.
Topic Sentence -makes a general statement usually supported by
details later
-generally the first sentence or very near
Persuasive Passage -supporting details: may use specific facts and
data, or it may detail specific reasons for the
author's opinion
Informative Passage -will primarily use facts about the topic to
support the main idea
