ATPL Principles of Flight - Control Exam 100% Solved Correctly Pitching - Answer- rotation around the lateral axis (and is related to longitudinal stability) Rolling - Answer- rotation around the longitudinal axis Yawing - Answer- rotation around the normal (vertical axis) To pitch up - Answer- back pressure on control column = elevator moves up + negative camber of tailplane/elevator increases (to provide downforce) Trimmable horizontal stabiliser (forward CG) - Answer- requires stabiliser to produce more downforce therefore lower stabiliser AoA needed Trimmable horizontal stabiliser (aft CG) - Answer- less nose down pitching moment from the wing - stabiliser does not need to produce as much down force - so stabiliser leading edge higher In trim - Answer- elevator will have no deflection in relation to the aerofoil Positive Angle of Incidence (Stabiliser) - Answer- stabiliser will give greater nose down pitching moments Internal Balance - Answer- flexible seal - uses pressure differentials within a sealed cavity forward of the hinge line Horn balance - Answer- part of control surface located ahead of the hinge line to protrude in the airflow Balance tab - Answer- deflect in opposite direction to main control Anti-balance tab - Answer- deflect in same direction to main control, for light control forces to increase control forces Trim tab - Answer- Once set a trim tab does not change its position relative to the control surface when that surface moves Servo tab - Answer- pilot's control input goes directly to the tab and control deflection carried out by the aerodynamic forces generated by the tab Spring tab - Answer- spring introduced into the control linkage to change stick forces at high speed. At high speeds, the spring stretches and deflection of the tab begins Adverse Yaw - Answer- aircraft yaws opposite to the intended roll (e.g. roll right → yaw left) Differential Ailerons - Answer- Downgoing aileron deflects less than the upgoing aileron, balances drag, aircraft yaws in correct direction. "Up more, down less." (Aileron deflection is upwards on the downgoing wing)

ATPL Principles of Flight - Control
Exam 100% Solved Correctly
Pitching - Answer- rotation around the lateral axis (and is related to longitudinal stability)

Rolling - Answer- rotation around the longitudinal axis

Yawing - Answer- rotation around the normal (vertical axis)

To pitch up - Answer- back pressure on control column = elevator moves up + negative
camber of tailplane/elevator increases (to provide downforce)

Trimmable horizontal stabiliser (forward CG) - Answer- requires stabiliser to produce
more downforce therefore lower stabiliser AoA needed

Trimmable horizontal stabiliser (aft CG) - Answer- less nose down pitching moment
from the wing - stabiliser does not need to produce as much down force - so stabiliser
leading edge higher

In trim - Answer- elevator will have no deflection in relation to the aerofoil

Positive Angle of Incidence (Stabiliser) - Answer- stabiliser will give greater nose down
pitching moments

Internal Balance - Answer- flexible seal - uses pressure differentials within a sealed
cavity forward of the hinge line

Horn balance - Answer- part of control surface located ahead of the hinge line to
protrude in the airflow

Balance tab - Answer- deflect in opposite direction to main control

Anti-balance tab - Answer- deflect in same direction to main control, for light control
forces to increase control forces

Trim tab - Answer- Once set a trim tab does not change its position relative to the
control surface when that surface moves

Servo tab - Answer- pilot's control input goes directly to the tab and control deflection
carried out by the aerodynamic forces generated by the tab

Spring tab - Answer- spring introduced into the control linkage to change stick forces at
high speed. At high speeds, the spring stretches and deflection of the tab begins
