1. Classification of Salts
Salts are formed when an acid reacts with a base in a neutralization reaction:
Acid + Base → Salt + Water [cite: 1]
• Simple/Normal Salt: Formed by complete neutralization. [cite: 1]
◦ Neutral Salt Strong Acid + Strong Base (pH = 7). [cite: 1]
◦ Acidic Salt Strong Acid + Weak Base (pH < 7). [cite: 1]
◦ Basic Salt Weak Acid + Strong Base (pH > 7). [cite: 1]
• Acidic Salt (Partial): Formed by partial neutralization of polyprotic acids (e.g.,
Sodium Bicarbonate, NaHCO3). [cite: 4]
• Double Salt: Formed when two or more simple salts combine. They dissociate
completely into ions in water (e.g., Potash Alum, Mohr’s Salt). [cite: 5]
• Complex Salt: Coordination compounds where the complex part does not ionize
(e.g., [Co(NH3)6]Cl3). [cite: 5]
• Mixed Salt: Contains multiple types of anions or cations (e.g., Bleaching Powder).
