IN INDONESIA
Benteng Vredeburg is a historical fort located in the center in indonesia of Yogyakarta,
right in front of Keraton Yogyakarta.
The fort was built in 1760 by the Dutch colonial government. At first, it was not meant to
protect the local people, but to monitor and control the activities of the Yogyakarta
Palace. The name “Vredeburg” means “fort of peace,” although in reality it was used to
maintain Dutch power in the region.
Over time, the fort became a witness to many important historical events, especially
during Indonesia’s struggle for independence. It was once occupied by the Japanese
during World War II, then taken over again by the Dutch, and finally controlled by
Indonesia after independence.
Today, Benteng Vredeburg has been turned into a museum. Inside, there are dioramas
and historical collections that show the story of Indonesia’s struggle, especially in
Yogyakarta.
In short, Benteng Vredeburg is not just an old building, but also a symbol of history and a
silent witness to Indonesia’s journey to independence.
