1. Fundamental Concepts & Electronegativity
Redox (Reductions-Oxidations): Electron transfer reactions.
Electronegativity (EN) Trends:
Element EN Element EN
H 2.1 F 4.0
Li 1.0 O 3.5
Be 1.5 N 3.0
B 2.0 Cl 3.0
C 2.5 Br 2.8
S 2.5 I 2.5
P 2.1 Si 1.8
Oxidation Number (ON) Rules for Covalent Bonds (A-B):
If EN(A) < EN(B): ON of A = +1, ON of B = -1 per bond.
If A = B: ON = 0 for both (No contribution).
2. Carbohydrates
Definition: Polyhydroxy aldehydes or ketones.
• Glucose: (3-OH) configuration difference.
• Mannose: (2,3-OH) configuration difference.
• Galactose: (3,4-OH) configuration difference.
• Fructose: Ketose sugar.
Note: D-glyceraldehyde is used as the parent structure for naming. If -OH is on the Right at the
second-to-last position, it is 'D'.
