Flowchart Aspects

Flowcharts are a useful tool to illustrate a visual representation of a certain process and to

help understand the existing process and find potential ways to improve it (Institution for

Healthcare Improvement, 2020). Healthcare organizations may benefit from the use of

flowcharts by offering a step-by-step analysis and identifying insufficiencies (Digital Healthcare

Research, 2020). This particular flowchart outlines the workflow process for emergency severity

index (ESI) Level 3 patients. In the flowchart, the steps of the process are represented by

different shapes, each which symbolize a different action. The flowchart starts with an oval

indicating the beginning or end of the workflow. The rectangle symbolizes a process taking

place, the diamond indicates a decision is to be made, the bullet shape represents a delay in the

process, and lastly, the flowchart ends with another oval to represent the end of the workflow

process.

The workflow begins upon a patient’s arrival to the emergency department (ED). The

process starts with 5 patients who are then registered by the receptionist into the healthcare

information system (HIS). This step takes about 21.4 minutes to complete. After the registration,

the patient must wait 32.6 minutes, which increases their time spent in the ED. The triage nurse

will then initiate the patient’s chart, taking another 24.8 minutes to complete. Next, the triage

nurse will escort the patient to the ED room and bed and will then give report to the ED nurse

who will then assume the patient’s care. This step takes 14.8 minutes to complete. The patient

then must wait another 43.2 minutes to be seen by the ED provider. The ED provider will then

conduct an examination of the patient that takes 17.8 minutes. Based on the examination

findings, the ED provider will then give orders. The orders could be labs, CT, radiology, or for a
